What a start to the decade… Australia’s burning, a new “coronavirus” epidemic of which very little is known, wars, separatism and political tensions from all over the world.
In a month there will be the Oscars, and Italian TV is currently showing Sanremo, 70th edition: this year as well I wanted to be right on that stage with my violin, and instead I’m watching it from home … who knows, maybe next year 😉
But what’s the point of these mega events? Do they unify? Are they distracting us? In such fast times, it’s really difficult to understand, or even just to put forth a tad of lucid analysis; the infinite amplification of social networks blends up news, stimuli, controversies and rare spaces of beauty, so it really takes a tonne of personality to avoid being blended in with the rest, and I speak of each individual, not only of public figures or artists.
Perhaps what still gives a positive sense to the Oscars, as well as Sanremo, is the art, the cinema and the music, in other words, what remains after the controversies of the day, the headlines and the barrage of tweets. Why? Cause music, and the narrative of art in general, is what we want it to be: life, love, anger, strength, joy, hilarity … it’s all and nothing, but it’s with us, inside us.
It’s a medicine with no obvious side effects, which works for the masses and in our personal and private space, when the sky is clear, or on a rainy day.
Often young people use music to escape from a “standard” life; music projects unreal worlds and sensations that help escape suffering, difficulties and problems, or help dissolve them within the musical notes. As adults, the songs we listened to as kids often remain in our caskets of sensations once they’re gone out of style.
Music becomes a home from which to enter and exit freely.
The consoling aspect of music is therefore perhaps the most profound reason why we tend to be quite forgiving when it come to events like Sanremo: the ups and downs, the delays, the displays of tackiness here and there. Though it should basically be that way in order to tell us everything, it must leave us with something and our hope must always be placed in the songs.
But music, now more than ever in these first months of 2020, must continue to make us dance, and fulfil its social function by talking about peace and hope.
So, here’s to hope placed in the songs of Sanremo, the soundtracks and the films nominated at the Oscars, and, as far as I’m concerned, we will continue to play towards a better future.
