For us Italians, Italy is our motherland, there are those who feel this patriotic spirit more and some who feel it less, but we are all children of this country; much of the rest of the world loves Italy for the contributions it has given, gives and will keep giving to civilization, for our creativity and the “humanistic beauty” of which we are ambassadors.
June 2nd in Italy marks Republic Day, a day linked to that first universal suffrage referendum of 1946 in which Italians decided the form of government with which to reorganize themselves after the war. It’s the most important holiday of our nation, much like the 4th of July in the United States or the 14th of July in France.
This blog reaches many people around the world and, as you know, I strongly believe in music as a universal language ( even more in the Space Violin Project to go beyond our planet): I’m a globetrotter who brings his own identity into play, curious to meet other cultures and enrich myself from that exchange; reinterpreting the anthem with contemporary musical languages alongside the more official versions of it is part of the communication of our times, and is dedicated to both Italians and all other listeners.
I have always loved the anthems that are played during sporting occasions or official celebrations: Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Back, Brian May, the Red Army Choir, the greatest pop-stars, mostly American and English, have given us unforgettable moments while measuring themselves with their national “song”.
Thanks to my brightly lit “lightning bow”, I’m combining music meant for your ears to music meant for your eyes, and this version of mine of the anthem is a simple, clear example: I wanted to celebrate our flag, and bring that “Song of the Italians” written in 1847 by Goffredo Mameli, and which we often refer to as “brothers of Italy “, to an intimate and proud musical dimension, as I think it’s my bond with the Motherland: something that I keep inside of me, no matter in which part of the world you may find me.
I have to thank guitarist and producer Davide Gobello who fully understood the spirit with which I wanted to reinterpret our national anthem and has proven that with his musical arrangement.
